Hovedbudskap

Summary

Morphine's sensitivity to light – possible implications in a palliative care setting

The aim of this study was to investigate the photostability of the medication cassette reservoirs Morfin SA 1 mg/ml, Morfin SA 10 mg/ml and Morfin SA 20 mg/ml, as well as infusion bags for spinal analgesia (0.25 mg/ml morphine hydrochloride trihydrate and 0.50 mg/ml bupivacaine hydrochloride).

The preparations were exposed to radiation representing approximately 3 months of continuous exposure to artificial light and approximately 1–2 days close to a sunny window. Preparations wrapped in aluminium foil served as dark controls.

Irradiation caused a decrease in pH in all preparations, but only for Morfin SA 20 mg/ml and the infusion bag did the concentration of morphine decrease, by 9% and 10%, respectively.

Hence, the photostability varied with formulation and packaging. To mitigate the risk of photodegradation, one meter distance from sunny windows is advantageous if a preparation is to be used continuously by a patient for more than 2 days.
